Appendix B

Covey uses the following technique to demonstrate how we are influenced by our experiences, and some of the limitations of our objectivity (Covey, 1982, pp. 1-2, 49, 85, 244; Covey, 1989, pp. 24-26, 45).

1.      Study the picture below for a few seconds.
2.      Without letting them see the picture below, have someone else look for a few seconds at the third picture.
3.      Now together look at the second picture, and compare observations. Who sees the young girl and who the old woman?

Couched within this demonstration is the concept of territory and maps. The picture below and the third picture formulated maps that shaped how the second picture (the territory) was observed.
