The following represents an extrapolation of the various characteristics Covey uses to describe principles, maps and the compass, the sources for each descriptive given (7H = 7 Habits; PC = Principle-centered Leadership), and the related difficulties.
1 - Mutually exclusive descriptives of “unchanging” and “constantly changing” are used to describe principles.
2 - A circular reference where principles and compass seem to point to each other. Although we can say that a compass points to the magnetic north (principles), it would not be correct to say that magnet north is like a compass.
3 - The map and compass are given exactly the same function, yet a map and a compass do not in reality fill the same function. A map is descriptive of the territory it represents, whereas a compass will only point north, with no consideration to what may lie between the here and the north.
